Write your bookkeeping firm's Google Business Profile description and services within Google's limits

Short answer

Use this when the profile description is blank, out of date or stuffed with keywords, or when you add services. You get a description under 750 characters and one short description per service, with character counts so you can paste them straight in.

These prompts help with marketing copy and Google Business Profile upkeep. They are not legal, tax or professional advice. Check Google's current guidelines, and your professional body's advertising rules if you hold a license, before you publish.

What the source describes

Google's Business Profile Help says the description should cover what you offer, what makes you special and how long you have been in business, must stay within 750 characters, and must not include URLs or HTML. Google's guidelines add that descriptions should not focus on promotions, prices or sales, and should not show links or gimmicky characters. Google also offers AI-written descriptions in some regions and says to review them for accuracy.

Result or outcome

According to the source, the description should cover what you offer, what makes you special and how long you have been in business, stay within 750 characters, and omit URLs and HTML. Guidelines add that descriptions should not focus on promotions, prices or sales, or show links or gimmicky characters. Where Google offers AI-written descriptions, it says to review them for accuracy.

How to run it

  1. Gather your service list, area served, years in business and two or three true differences.
  2. Add the words clients use, from your reviews or from Competitor Review Teardown Prompt for Bookkeeping Firms.
  3. Check the character limit shown in your services editor and put it in the prompt.
  4. Paste each draft into the profile editor and confirm the counter shows it within the limit.
  5. Confirm every claim on the "to confirm" list, then save.

Copyable prompt

Act as a copywriter for [firm name], a bookkeeping firm. Write Google Business Profile copy using only the facts below.

Facts:
- Services (name and what is included): [list]
- Who we serve: [list]
- Area served: [towns or region]
- Years in business: [number or "new firm"]
- What is genuinely different about us (only true, checkable points): [list]
- Words local clients use for what we do (from reviews or calls): [list]

Write:
1. A business description of 600 to 750 characters (count spaces). Lead with what we do and who we serve, then what is different, then the area. No URLs, no HTML, no prices, no sales or promotions, no ALL CAPS, no emoji, no "best" or "number one", no guarantees. Use each local client phrase at most once, only where it reads naturally.
2. For each service, a service description under [service description limit shown in your services editor] characters, saying what is included and who it suits. No prices unless I add them.
3. Show the exact character count after each piece. If any piece is over its limit, rewrite it before showing it.
4. List any claim in your copy that I need to confirm is true.

Replace the [bracketed] placeholders. Remove client names, account numbers, and personal data before pasting into any AI tool.

Character counts from chat assistants can be off by a few characters; paste into the profile editor and check its counter before saving.

Sample output (illustrative, fictional firm)
Description (619 characters)
Maple Street Bookkeeping keeps the books for small businesses, contractors and churches in [town] and nearby communities. Each month we record income and expenses, reconcile bank and credit card accounts, and send a short report you can actually read. We also set up QuickBooks for new businesses, clean up books that have fallen behind, and run payroll for small teams. Every client has one named point of contact and a fixed monthly package agreed before work starts. We have served local businesses for [number] years. We do not prepare tax returns, and we work alongside your tax preparer so year-end goes smoothly.

Service: Monthly bookkeeping (196 characters)
Recording income and expenses, reconciling bank and card accounts, and a monthly report with profit and loss. Suits small businesses that want their books current every month without hiring staff.

Claims to confirm: "fixed monthly package agreed before work starts", "[number] years", "one named point of contact".

What to review

Remove prices, links, promotions and any claim you cannot prove. Make sure the description does not imply services you do not offer, and that titles such as CPA appear only if they apply.

Audit your bookkeeping firm's Google Business Profile categories and attributes with AI

Google's Business Profile Help says to pick a primary category that best describes the business, choosing the most specific option on its list, and notes you cannot create your own category. You can add up to 9 more categories, but Google says not to use categories as keywords or to describe features. Changing a category may trigger re-verification. Attributes describe the business, some factual ones can be edited, and subjective ones come from Google users.

Google Search Central documents LocalBusiness structured data, which can tell Google a business's name, address, hours and other details, and lists required and recommended properties. Google's Business Profile Help says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and suggests keeping business information complete and accurate. Google announced in August 2023 that FAQ rich results would show only for well-known, authoritative government and health sites, so FAQs on a firm's page help readers rather than earning a rich result.

Turn the public Google reviews of 3 nearby bookkeeping firms into service and messaging ideas with AI

Google's Business Profile Help says reviews are useful to potential customers when they are honest and objective, and that a mix of positive and negative reviews is more trustworthy. It says to value all reviews, reply to them, and remind customers to leave reviews, and that business owners should not offer incentives. Google's Maps content policy prohibits fake engagement, which rules out writing or buying reviews for your own or a competitor's profile.

Google's Business Profile Help describes three post types: Updates, Offers (title, dates and time required, with a View Offer button) and Events (title, start and end dates). Google says posts with a phone number in the text may be rejected, and that posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set.
